The Early Years
Hitachi's construction manufacturing branch was established in Tokyo, Japan, in 1951. The makers took it upon themselves to redesign tools everyone took for granted. In 1958, they released their cable-operated shovel, the first of its kind worldwide to use fluid couplings, enhancing its efficiency and power.
The Innovations
Hitachi quickly captured the Japanese markets and entered the Americas, where it made significant strides. In 1979, Hitachi introduced the largest machine of its kind in the world—the Ultra-large Hydraulic Excavator UH801—to North America for mining operations. In the later years, they released superior models that offered improved fuel efficiency and performance.
In the 1980s, Hitachi established the US branch of the Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation and expanded further into the western hemisphere market.
The Partnership with John Deere®
In 1983, Hitachi and John Deere® entered a supply agreement, where John Deere® branded Hitachi machines. In 1988, they established the Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation and started producing hydraulic excavators in the United States.
Hitachi's advanced designs and technologies benefited John Deere, and John Deere's home-grown name and the company's 150-year history benefited Hitachi. However, in 2019, both companies mutually agreed to end their partnership. Today, Hitachi is capturing more markets with their premium products and offering customers a chance to be part of this lasting legacy.
