Under 25 Horsepower: Sub-Compact Tractors

These tractors are best suited for light farm work. The smallest on the market, these machines offer impressive agility and the ability to easily navigate tight spaces. This makes them ideal for traveling around barns and trees. These models also tend to come at the lowest price, so they’re a great choice for those on a tight budget. 

Keep in mind that the lower power potential limits the attachments you can use. Specifications for a machines of this size include:

  • Weight: between 500 and 1,200 pounds .
  • Rear wheel size: less than 30”.
  • Width: less than 48”.

25 to 60 Horsepower: Compact Tractors

Another size of tractor you can choose is a compact tractor. These rigs can handle most agricultural needs. Then generally provide the power potential needed to handle a wide range of tasks.

These machines offer good maneuverability and great implement compatibility, too. The higher horsepower makes it easier to use a tiller or a box-blade to get major projects done.

Larger models within this size category feature a turbocharger on the engine which boosts performance. This makes them perfect for larger projects like clearing a field or grading roads.

  • Weight: 1,500 to 6,000 pounds .
  • Rear wheel size: 30” to 36”.
  • Width: 42” to 54”.

60 to 140 Horsepower: Utility Tractors

For those who have larger commercial agricultural projects, it’s a good idea to size up and go with a utility model. The larger size of these rigs makes it easier to fit more features onto the tractor. You’ll find models with multiple hydraulic hookups and PTOs at the front, back and side. Cabs usually come with comfort features like heating, air conditioning, and adjustable seating.

  • Weight: 3,000 to 4,000 pounds.
  • Wheel size: 36” to 60”.
  • Width: 54” to 72”.
