Do a Visual Inspection

You can tell a lot about your equipment simply by looking at it. Sometimes problems are pretty glaring and you'll notice them right away. See if you notice any misplaced cables, loose hoses, or leaks. Often these only require a quick fix such as tightening the attachment or reconnecting the hose. Next, inspect the glass sediment bowl. This is found underneath the fuel filter. If you notice water or material swirling around inside it, this may be a red flag for an issue with your fuel, fuel filter, or engine. You should schedule a visit to a tractor dealer service shop to get this repaired.

Check the Radiator Fluid and Engine Oil

One key aspect of tractor maintenance is avoiding the engine overheating. It's all too easy to do when you use your equipment on a nearly-daily basis and for an extended period of time. But an overheated engine will end up needing a trip to a tractor dealer service department in no time. To avoid this, check the levels of coolant and lubricant for your engine and radiator. Top these off when needed.

You're going to lose fluids through normal use. But if you notice them draining at a high rate, this could signal an issue. Measure the amounts for a few days. If you are still finding them draining at a high rate, you'll want to take it in to the shop.

You'll also want to check your engine oil, much like you do with your commuter vehicle. One difference is you will want to let your tractor run for a few minutes first. Then turn it off and wait a few minutes. Then you can use the dipstick as normal. Oil that is discolored and sludgy suggests the need for an oil change and filter replacement.

Tend to Your Fuel

Most owners use their tractor enough that they are using fresh fuel. But there are often times where your equipment will sit unused in the shop, such as during the off-season. If it's going to be over a week until you use your tractor next, you'll benefit from a fuel stabilizer. This miracle product helps keep water from collecting or separating out of the fuel. This is a great method for preventing rust in the tank or other issues that require a mechanic's fix.

Check Your Tires

Try to measure your tire air pressure every so often. If tires get over-inflated or under-inflated, it can cause a range of issues. Simply use a tire pressure gauge to see where your levels are at and compare this to the manufacturer's recommendation. You can find that information on the tire wall, owner's manual, or even the manufacturer's website.
