How To Use Tractor Attachments
Tractor attachments are very useful. Not only is it a lot more economical to purchase a tractor attachment or implement instead of an entirely new machine, but there are many different attachments and implements available for purchase. Whether you need to dig, till, mow, or excavate, there’s sure to be a tractor attachment for you. Of course, misusing a tractor attachment can lead to unintentional damage to people and property. That’s why the experts at RECO Equipment have created this guide to using tractor attachments.
Compatibility
Before you even attempt to use an attachment with your tractor, you need to make sure that it is compatible with your model. Incompatibility occurs when a particular attachment is too heavy for the tractor it is attached to, or else the tractor lacks a necessary feature such as power take-off. At best, incompatible attachments won’t work properly, and at worst they can cause serious damage to people and property.
Loading Attachment
If you’re using a loading attachment, always hitch it to the drawbar. This will help keep the downward and rear force below the center of gravity so that that tractor doesn’t overturn. Don’t forget to use the hitch pin and security clip as well. You’ll need to connect the PTO shaft, hydraulic hoses, and any required electrical connections before you start using the attachment.
Power Take-Off
PTO or power take-off means that an implement is powered by the tractor’s drivetrain. PTO spins very quickly, so secure any loose hair or clothing to ensure that nothing gets caught in it and pulled under the tractor. Implements should only be hitched and connected when the tractor is powered down.
Hydraulics
Many tractors attachments utilize some form of hydraulics. It’s important that you understand that hydraulic fluid is typically pressurized. Always use proper eye protection like safety glasses or a face shield when working with a hydraulics system. A properly functioning hydraulics system requires proper lubrication to function correctly, so take care of your implements. Hydraulic fluid also tends to be under extreme pressure so be on the lookout for possible leaks.
