Link-Belt is the brainchild of farm implement dealer William Dana Ewart, who sought to boost the efficiency of heavy equipment and minimize their downtime. Around the late 1800s, machines like harvesters and excavators came equipped with a chain belt instead of a linked belt. With use, this chain would wear down unevenly, necessitating repair of the entire belt, which would delay work and lead to significant monetary losses.

Ewart created a replacement for the chain belt with a square detachable link—a linked belt. This helped reduce service department visits and overall repair costs, as farm operators could fix the broken parts on the linked chain in the field itself. This created a revolution of sorts and helped Ewart obtain a patent in 1874. Linked belts quickly started featuring on almost every power transmission and material-handling equipment. Soon after, the Link-Belt Machinery Company was formed in 1880 and the Link-Belt Engineering Company followed in 1888. A century later, the Link-Belt Construction Equipment Company became a global joint venture. Today, its spin-off, The LBX Company, manufactures Link-Belt excavators, including other earthmoving, forestry, and demolition equipment for both North and South America.
